Mouthguard Fitting

It’s an Aussie tradition to play sports, but if you or any of your friends or family play ball sports or contact sports, mouthguards are a necessary accessory if you value your teeth and smile. Teeth are one of the most precious assets you will ever have.

As soon as kids start any kind of ball sports or contact sports they should start wearing a mouthguard so they can get into a good habit for life. Injuries can happen afterall at any age, at any time.

Although you can purchase mouthguards from many retail outlets, they are often of an inferior thickness and therefore not as protective. Mouthguards purchased direct from retailers also require you to create your own mouthguard mould. If you create your own mouthguard mould, or even if you get assistance from a friend or family member, without the professional knowledge of the mouths structure and the experience of fitting mouth moulds that a dentist has, you run the risk of not ensuring the mould reaches the top of your gums leaving you with a mouthguard which will not necessarily protect you should a sports accident occur. If you do not get a sufficient impression of this area, the force from any strike to the teeth or mouth area may result in broken or lost teeth.

The fact is, mouthguards need to be at least 2mm in thickness. A lot of readily available mouthguards from chemists and other retailers do not meet this requirement.

But it needn’t be a costly exercise. If you have professional health cover you may be able to claim a significant amount of the cost to purchase and fit a mouthguard from our practice, leaving the same gap as if you had purchased from any retailer without the professional fitting service.
